Rooney Mara

Patricia Rooney Mara, the American actress was born on 17th April 1985, at New York, U.S. She is the daughter of Timothy Christopher Mara, the vice president of player personnel for the New York Giants, and Kathleen McNulty, a real estate agent. She is the younger sister of Kate Mara, the American actress, fashion model and film producer. 

She began acting at the age of nineteen, as an extra in her sister’s movies. Her debut in television was in a 2006 episode of the drama Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. She rose into prominence with the supporting role she did in the biographical drama The Social Network (2010). Her career breakthrough happened through the character Lisbeth Salander in The Girl with Dragon Tattoo (2011), and she got nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress for that film. She also received the Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Actress for her performance in the romantic drama Carol (2015). 


Rooney Mara Religion

She has Irish, German, French-Canadian, English, and Italian ancestry. She is Catholic by her religion. She was brought up as Catholic in an Irish-American family, but once in an interview, she stated that she stopped attending the Mass in the church “as soon as she got a car”. 

She did the title role in the film Mary Magdalene, and she admitted that her connection with her religion helped her to understand and present the character in a better way. 


Rooney Mara Political Views

She is known for her philanthropist works in and out of the U.S. She is the founder of the charity Faces of Kibera. The organization aims at providing housing, food and medical care for orphans in Kibera, a Nairobi, and Kenya slum. Later in 2011, Faces of Kibera merged with Uweza Foundation. 

She had done roles like that in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, but when asked if she is a feminist, her reply was that she don’t know what it means to be a feminist. 

Apart from that, it seems like she is not interested in political matters. It is not whether she is Republican or Democrat, even though her relatives are famous Republicans.  


Who is she dating?

Mara has started dating American film director and writer in the year 2010. The couple kept their relationship details low-key, which was the style preferred by McDowell. Later in 2016, they got separated. 

She met American actor Joaquin Phoenix in 2013 during the set of the film Her. Rumours say that they started dating in 2017 while filming Mary Magdalene. In 2019, the couple got married and as May 2020, they’re expecting their first child.

She is an ardent fan of football and likes to play the same, as she came from a family which supports the sport.

    • Her mother is from the family which founded the Pittsburgh Steelers and father is from the family which founded the New York Giants. 

    • She got inspiration for acting after watching musical theatre and classic movies like Gone with the Wind (1939), Rebecca (1940), and Bringing Up Baby (1938). 

    • Mara dropped her first name ‘Patricia’, after working on the project “I never really liked my first name”. 

    • Mara is a vegan.
