He is the son of insurance actuary James Steven Hawke and social worker Leslie Carole Green. His debut film is the 1985 science fiction feature Explorers. He then gave his film breakthrough performance in the 1989 drama Dead Poets Society. He starred in many other movies such as The Magnificent Seven, Before the Devil Knows You're Dead, 24 Hours to Live, Before Midnight, Born to be Blue, and Tesla, to name only a few of them. Moreover, he directed three feature films and three Off-Broadway plays. He also directed a documentary. He has been nominated for four academy awards and a Tony Award.
